The VBLA's Ocean Swim Series finished up this past Sunday, August 16. The trepidatious 5K. Yes, that's 40 blocks -- from 17th to 57th Street -- in the Atlantic Ocean. Congrats to all those that came out and accomplished something amazing!
These races help support the local guys and gals that protect the millions of lives that visit the beach each and every summer. Sometimes it's providing medical support when Uncle Bob breaks his wrist trying to skimboard for the first time ever. Or helping someone that's a bit dehydrated after a few too many Orange Crushes. Our lifeguards also reunite lost children with their parents on a daily basis.
The Virginia Beach Lifeguard Association is our local chapter of the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), the national organization of open water lifesavers committed to reducing drowning and preventing injury in the aquatic environment. They promote water safety throughout our community while also competing in a sport they love (and very much overlooked): Lifesaving. It's not just a sport -- it's a way of life.
Make it your goal to come out and support your local lifeguards next year during the 2016 VBLA Ocean Swim Series!
Enjoy the montage of this weekend's 5K!
